Fatal accident in Strovolos (Update 2)

A 69-year-old woman was killed on Monday and another, 55, is in critical condition after they were hit by a car while trying to cross the street near Strovolos town hall in Nicosia.

According to the police, the accident occurred at around 8.10pm when the car driven by a 25-year-old female driver hit the two women while they were on a crossing in Strovolos Avenue.

Both women were taken to the Nicosia General hospital where the 69-year-old was pronounced dead.

The 55-year-old is in critical condition. The driver of the car was arrested.

Nicosia traffic police chief Harris Evripidou told the Cyprus News Agency that the 25-year-old was driving on the left lane and switched to the right to overtake when the car in front of her slowed down, thus hitting the two women who were crossing the street. The 25-year-old’s breathalyzer test was negative.

Police are investigating whether the front car’s driver had slowed down after he or she saw the two women crossing the street, Evripidou said. The two women were on a pelican crossing.

Evripidou thanked members of the public for responding to calls to provide information as to the circumstances of the accident.
