Man and his dogs find hidden weapons during daily walk

Police believe may have averted a crime, after a revolver and a sawn-off shotgun buried in the ground near Palodia, in Limassol, were accidentally discovered on Sunday morning by a man and his dogs.

The two guns which were in good condition were found at around 7am while a local resident was walking his dogs near Palodia. According to the head of the Limassol CID Ioannis Soteriades, the dogs ran to a spot which was freshly dug and covered with rocks. The owner, after digging at the spot, found a six-inch pipe and then the two guns wrapped individually in nylon bags.

He alerted the police, who cordoned off the area for further investigations. The guns were taken for a forensic firearm examination and other scientific tests.

Preliminary checks showed that both were in good and usable condition. The revolver did not have a serial number on it or other identifiers, while the shotgun’s serial number was illegible, Soteriades told the Cyprus News Agency.

Locating the weapons, he said, may very well have prevented a crime, and stressed the importance of the public working together with the police.
