UN Security Council’s P5 agree draft resolution for UNFICYP

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) have agreed on the draft resolution for the renewal of the UNFICYP`s mandate.

The resolution will be adopted during an open session of the UNSC on Tuesday morning local time.

There are only two differences compared to the previous resolution 2263 in January 2016.

The first one is in the fourth paragraph of the preamble, which refers to the commitments of the Joint Statements of May 15 and June 8 by the two leaders. The second one is in the operative part where a whole paragraph is added on UNFICYP’s planning for a transition to a settlement.

It says that the UNSC asks the Secretary General to intensify the planning for a transition regarding the settlement, led by the developments at the negotiations and encourages all sides to engage among themselves as well as with UNFICYP and the UN good offices mission on issues related to the implementation of a settlement.

Later Monday New York Time, Eide will brief the members of the UN Security Council on the developments at the Cyprus talks and have a meeting with the UN Secretary General. (CNA)
