British tourist dies after Limassol brawl

LIMASSOL police yesterday opened a manslaughter investigation into the death of a British tourist beaten up by three men in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The victim, identified as London resident Stuart Butler, died in Nicosia’s general hospital on Monday. He had been receiving treatment for serious cranial injuries.

Butler was attacked early on New Year’s Day by three men while walking along Ambelakion Street in Yearmasoyia with an English Cypriot man and three female friends.

Police said the incident happened at around 3.30am after one of the three men – who were aged between 17 and 60 – shouted abuse at one of the women in the company.
The English Cypriot reacted, and a fight broke out during which Butler was smashed on the head with a bottle.

The incident was captured on a surveillance camera, but despite police efforts no one has been arrested yet.

Police said yesterday they had some new information and that efforts to bring the three to justice would continue.
