Most of us are probably in holiday mode – taking a few days or weeks off from work or life – but one thing that never takes a break is music. Some even believe that it is such a strong force that it brings us together, breaks down barriers and can make a difference in the world. One thing is for sure, the musical events coming up will surely bring all music lovers together, as well as giving them the chance to find out something about their musical taste that they never knew before.
The Flautissimo Limassol Flute Choir is not letting the humidity of the coastal town get them down, instead they are getting ready to pick up their flutes and entertain us tomorrow and on Saturday.
The ensemble of young enthusiastic musicians – who are all students of flute player and teacher Theodoros Krasides – is led by Krasides when giving concerts, and they all share a passion for the flute.
Their repertoire features something for everyone, and these summer performances are no different. The programme will blend famous classical orchestral music pieces, such as Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite in B Minor, Johann Strauss’ Blue Danube, beautiful waltzes by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Dmitri Shostakovich, as well as beloved Greek and Cypriot pieces such as Manos Hadjidakis’ Paper Moon and White Rose and The Night Smells of Jasmine by Marios Tokas.
But it is not only about the music of the flute, the concerts are also about the instruments of the flute family themselves. While getting to know some pieces of music you have perhaps never heard before, you will also have the chance to hear the silvery sound of the C flute, the brightness of the piccolo and the deep sounds of the bigger section of the family – the alto flute and bass flute.
One thing is for sure with the Flautissimo Limassol Flute Choir, the music they make is truly magical and it may lead you, as flutes are known to do, to other places and times.
While Limassol will have its flutes, Nicosia will have its pianos. Two young pianists, Georgios Kypridemos and Maya-Leigh Rosenwasser, will perform at the Kyriakides Piano Gallery on Monday and Tuesday.
Kypridemos took up the piano at a young age and won a number of national and international competitions before studying piano performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is also part of several collaborative ensembles performing chamber music and free improvisation.
Rosenwasser, who is currently a third-year student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, has been involved in a number of solo and chamber recitals in Scotland, including performing with a contemporary chamber ensemble on the first night of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s annual Piano Festival.
The pair will perform pieces by Alexander Scriabin, Edvard Grieg, Edward MacDoweell, Maurice Ravel, Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
