All us movie-going Nicosians usually await the Constantia summer move marathon with anticipation. This year the marathon will run from Wednesday, July 13 all the way until September 19.
Screenings will take place on Wednesday through to Sunday at 9pm. Entrance is €5 and free for children under ten-years-old and people with disabilities.
The summer move marathon opens with the screening of the 2015 Greek film Ouzeri Tsitsanis.
Directed by Manousos Manousakis and starring Andreas Konstantinou and Lakis Komninos, the film is set during World War II in Greece. The main focus is on an old Jewish community in Thessaloniki where Georgos, a young Christian, falls in love with Estrea, a Jew.
This forbidden relationship unfolds during the period that people’s music in the form of Rembetico was finding large audiences and composer Vasilis Tsitsanis was becoming famous.
War, love and music come together in this emotional drama as Georgos works in the ouzeri where Tsitsanis also works. It is here where the couple’s relationship develops and where music is presented as a force that may bring people together.
A second screening of the film will take place on August 13.
Next on the agenda is the 2014 German drama Le Meraviglie (The Wonders) on Thursday.
The film, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2014, tells the story of a family of beekeepers living in the Tuscan countryside. The family household is disrupted by the simultaneous arrival of a silently troubled teenage boy and a reality TV show intent on showcasing the family.
The drama is directed and written by Alice Rohrwacher and stars Alba Rohrwacher and Maria Alexandra Lungu. It will be shown for a second time on August 25.
The third film to be shown next week is Qu’est-ce qu’on a Fait au Bon Dieu? (Serial Bad Weddings)
The 2014 French comedy, directed by Philippe de Chauveron and starring Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby, find its laughs in the tragedy of a Catholic French family.
The Verneuils family are Catholic, well-off and well-educated and everything would be just right if three of their daughters didn’t make the same mistake – marrying three young men of different religions and origins. So when their fourth daughter tells her parents she is going to marry a nice Catholic boy, they are over the moon.
Catch the comedy again for a second time – or if you can’t make the first screening – on August 28.
