Tenders open for works at Dherynia and Lefka crossings

The Technical Committee on Crossings, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme on Friday announced the launch of works tender for the road works for the crossing points at Dherynia and Lefka.

The UNDP will accept offers through to July 1, 2016.

Following the announcement by the Leaders on 28 May 2015, the Technical Committee on Crossings immediately began work on the openings.

Agreement was reached in the Committee on designs, technical specifications and modalities of project implementation.

The European Union, amended the Green Line Regulation to add these new crossings to the list of official crossing points. On November 17, 2015, Member States unanimously approved the allocation of €2.1 million through the UNDP for the northern parts of both crossings, from the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.

A Contribution Agreement between the European Commission and the UNDP was signed in March 2016. A Cambodian demining team deployed through inter-mission cooperation from the neighbouring UN mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, carried out mine clearance activities in support of the opening of both crossings from 28 September to 26 November 2015.

“With both crossing sites declared mine-free, surveys and designs for the sections of the roads located in the northern part of Cyprus, were commissioned by UNDP and carried out between February and April 2016,” the announcement said.

At Lefka, the overall length of the road to be improved is 980 metres. The road footprint includes 7.0 metres for the road pavement and 2.0 metres for road shoulders on both sides (1.0 m on each side). Ditches will be constructed where required on both sides of the road for rain water conveyance. Retaining walls, gabions and box culverts will be constructed at locations identified on the project. Guardrails, road signs and road markings will be placed for traffic management and safety.

At Dherynia, the overall length of the road to be improved is 2750 metres. The road footprint includes 7.0 metres for the road pavement and 2.0 metres for road shoulders on both sides (1.0 m on each side). Ditches will be also be constructed where required on both sides of the road for rain water conveyance. Box culverts will be constructed at locations identified on the project. Road signs and road markings will be placed for traffic management and safety, the announcement said.
