Police stepping up measures during long weekend

Police will be stepping up traffic measures over the long holiday weekend but it also warned the public to take precautions when leaving the house.

The force said it will intensify patrols on highways and other main roads, especially those leading to the coast and mountain resorts.

Officers will be paying special attention on speeding, dangerous overtaking, drink driving, and failure to use seatbelts and crash helmets.

Additional measures will be put in place on bank holiday Monday, during the public’s return from coastal areas to the capital.

Police officers will also be carrying out patrols in the cities and the countryside in a bid to prevent burglaries and theft, which record a rise during the holidays, as perpetrators take advantage of the residents’ absence.

The force urged the public to take precautions before leaving home but also while out and about.

People were advised not to carry valuables on the beach, opt for hotels and other establishments that provide security, and leave no indications they were away from home.

Shop owners should leave their cash machines open and store any property, the police said. Alarm systems should also be installed.

Online social media users were also advised to avoid uploading upload posts that show they were not home.
