Remembering UN peacekeepers who died in Cyprus

Representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, accompanied by the Ambassador of Slovakia in Cyprus Oksana Tomova, participated on Monday in a ceremony to honour fallen peacekeepers on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
The ceremony, which was marked after one of the the regular bi-communal meetings between political parties held under the auspices of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic, took place in the UN Protected Area in Nicosia, in the presence of United Nations officials and staff.
“We pay tribute to all the men, and women who have lost their life in cause of peace and to those who have served and continue to serve in peaceful conditions,” Tomova said in her address.
Speakers at the ceremony included the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Cyprus, Lisa Buttenheim and UNFICYP Force Commander Major General Kristin Lund.
According to an UNFICYP announcement, in its 52-year history, some 186 military, police and civilian peacekeepers have lost their lives.
