Government ‘actively promoting sustainable mobility’

A deal was clinched by the public works department on Tuesday for electronic bus tickets, Transport Minister Marios Demetriades said.

Speaking during the fourth annual conference on sustainable mobility he said they were working on trying to implement telematics – GPS systems on buses.

“The ministry is now actively promoting sustainable mobility,” Demetriades said by developing public transport, pedestrian areas and exploring the possibility of creating a fixed rail transport system such as a tram in Nicosia.

Stressing the importance of sustainable mobility, he said there was a sustainable urban mobility plan for every city across Cyprus as it was a matter that not only serviced the needs of the public but “reduces the burden on resources both for now and future generations.”

It affects the environment, society and the country’s finance, Demetriades said.

“Development is everyone’s primary goal but this should be based on sustainability so the benefits reaped will be maximised, short term and long term.”

It can help boost our quality of life, service the public and kick start the economy, Demetriades said.
