A hiking we will go

After chomping down our Easter souvla and chocolate, it might be time to start up an exercise routine again and get as fit as we can before hitting the beach.

One way could be to join the hiking group Cyprus Strollers who will be heading to the Madari mountain in the Pitsilia area next Sunday.

The Pitsilia area includes about 30 villages, which nestle on the mountainside among vineyards or are hidden away in valleys. A day away here takes you back to the old days with traditional products, such as aromatic rosewater, hiromeri (smoked ham), loukanika (smoked sausages) and lountza (smoked pork loin).

The surrounding hills and valleys are full of vines, as well as almond, hazelnut, walnut and other fruit trees.

The hike itself is considered difficult as it follows the Madari circular walk. This should take up to six hours, but the views, the smells of pines and wild flowers and the fresh air will make it all worthwhile.

The walk starts at 10.15am but those starting off from Nicosia can meet up at the Ayia Sophia church in Strovolos at 9.15am and share a car.

Walkers must take plenty of water as there will be none available on the route. Snacks are also recommended.

After the walk, the group will go to a nearby café for further refreshments.

Full information about the hike can be found on https://cyprus-strollers.org/activities-description/madari-grand-circle-sunday-8-may/.
