Latsia high school students win EU quiz

STUDENTS of the Latsia lyceum were the winners of a quiz on Europe which took place in stages during February and March.

The final quiz took place on Wednesday in the form of multiple choice questions and tested students’ knowledge on European issues.

According to an announcement, the four schools that qualified in each district took part in the final. The schools were represented by teams of four.

The winning team from Latsia Lyceum and four pupils from Makarios Lyceum in Larnaca who came second won a study trip to Brussels or Strasbourg together with two teachers.

In third and fourth place, respectively, are the lyceum Ayios Charalambous from Emba (Paphos) and the high school of  Apostolos Loucas from Kolossi.

The national competition is a knowledge quiz on the EU organised for the second time by the European Parliament Information Office and the European Commission representation in Cyprus. This year, 33 schools from all over Cyprus took part – each represented by four students from the second grade of the lyceum (fifth grade high school).

Nine of the participating schools were from Limassol, four from Paphos, 13 from Nicosia and seven from Larnaca and Famagusta.

“The competition helps to better inform students about the European Union, especially for programmes like Erasmus+ that directly affect them,” said the head of the EC Representation in Nicosia, George Markopouliotis.

“Through the contest,” head of the European Parliament Office Andreas Ketta commented, “students understand policies and EU decisions directly related to them and they are able to have their own contribution by becoming active citizens and participate in EU programmes.”
