Starting on Wednesday, the Technoplis 20 Culural Centre in Paphos will screen a number of contemporary Spanish films in association with the Instituto Cervantes of Nicosia and the Embassy of Spain.
The first film to be shown will be the comedy drama Vivires Facil Con Los Ojos Cerrados (Living is Easy with Eyes Closed). Directed and written by David Trueba, and starring Javier Camara, Francesc Colomer and Natalia de Molina, the film is set in Spain, 1966.
A teacher in a small public school uses Beatles song lyrics in his classroom and is clearly a fan. So when he learns that John Lennon is filming in the Almeria section of Spain, he decides to take a journey to meet his idol.
Along the way he meets a 20-year-old pregnant girl and a teenage boy who is running away from his overbearing father. He decides to take them along with him on his journey, which leads to an unlikely friendship between the three.
The second film, Stockholm, will screen on Wednesday. Stockholm is a romantic drama directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and starring Javier Pereira, Aura Garrido and Jesus Caba.
The whole story revolves around a guy who tries to get a girl he meets at a party to like him. She isn’t interested but that doesn’t stand in his way. The two engage in a long conversation and, in the end, he manages to gain her attention.
The third film is Gente en Sitios (People in Places) and will be screened on April 6.
The 2013 comedy drama, directed by Juan Cavestany and starring Ernesto Alterio and Carlos Areces, presents a number of different circumstances with no apparent correlation – more than 20 short scenes portraying 2013 Spain.
On April 13 the cultural centre will follow two young boys from Mali in the film Diamantes Negros (Black Diamonds), directed by Miguel Alcantud and starring Setigui Diallo and Hamidou Samake.
The boys are travelling to Spain to pursue their dram of escaping from poverty by becoming professional football players.
The fifth and last film is the drama La Herida (Wounded), directed by Fernando Franco and starring Luis Callejo, Manolo Solo and Andres Gertrudix will screen on April 20.
La Herida tells the tale of 30-year-old ambulance driver Ana. Though good at her job, Ana has problems in her personal life due to Borderline Personality Disorder. This disorder brings on self-destructive behaviour, alcohol abuse and self-harm.
All five films were released in 2013. The cost for one screening is €3 and €10 for all five screenings. All films will be screened with Greek subtitles and start at 7.30pm.
