A musical week

This week hopefully the air will be filled with a lot less dust in addition to a variety of musical notes to twist everybody’s ear – and perhaps introduce them to a new musical genre.

Starting off in Limassol on Thursday, Russian musician Elina Linchevskaya and Czech musician Zbynek Maruska will perform a piano duo – Tribute to Vienna.

The two pianists will join forces to perform compositions by WA Mozart, J Brahms and J Strauss.

Both Linchevskaya and Maruska’s studies at the Prague Musical Academy, the Russian Academy of Music and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow enabled them to develop substantial recital activities as soloists as well as play with orchestras such as the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Plzenska Filharmonie and other well-known musical ensembles of chamber music such as the Prague Mozart Quintet.

Their artistic careers together with their musical discipline enabled the two to create a close and fruitful artistic relationship. This love of music and their friendship has led the two musicians to set up a piano duo which aims to demonstrate the completeness in expression and fullness of sound of the pianoforte, and also offer the music loving public the pleasure of enjoying musical presentations.

Moving on to Sunday in Nicosia and Limassol the musical vibe swings to a more jazzy level.

At the Windcraft Music Centre in Nicosia the Michael Messios Symmetry Band will play some of their new original compositions. Get to see them while you can because the next time they hit a stage will be in Berlin and then who knows where the rhymes may take them.

The band consists of Charis Ioannou on the saxophone, Marios Toumbas on the piano, Michael Messios on double bass and Ioannis Vafeas on the drums. Together the four musicians have performed in numerous local and international festivals. Each time they take their musical instruments in hand they bring the art of improvisation on stage with incredible artistry. On Sunday they will be performing contemporary jazz pieces of music.

Michael Messios’ more recent compositions can be characterised as contemporary jazz with strong influences from traditional jazz. In the music one can recognise strong melodies along with complex rhythms and harmony. The variety of rhythms and styles keep the listener’s interest throughout the concert.

Jazz music will also be on at the Londa in Limassol when saxophone player and composer Lenny Sendersky from Israel and guitar player Tony Romano from the USA will bring their jazz styles together.

The two musicians will be accompanied by Cyprus jazz musicians Leonid Nesterov, Nicolas Tryphonos and Andreas Stephanou.

They will perform a heady mix of jazz styles, from swing to funk and ethnic jazz.
