Contract awarded for north-side works at new crossing points

A contractor has been commissioned for the road works in the north, ahead of the opening of two more crossing points at Lefka and Dherynia, a statement from the Turkish Cypriot ‘interior ministry’ said on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the tenders process by the United Nations’ Development Programme (UNDP) has been concluded, with the €2.1-million projects awarded to M-Tas & Ahmet Korukoglu Ltd.

According to planning, work in the northern side of the crossing points is scheduled to be concluded by March.

The statement added that roadworks on the government-controlled areas will be funded by the government, while the small patch of road connecting the two sides will be paved by a bi-communal joint venture, funded by the Republic of Cyprus.

The project south of the Lefka crossing point is expected to be finished in a year and a half.

According to the statement, European Union financial aid will only be provided for the construction of roads, and that another request will be filed with the EU for additional funding so that required infrastructure can be constructed.

It added that an additional 70 will be hired by ‘police’ in the north, in order to operate the two crossing points.
