Majority of animals in ‘unacceptable’ conditions

CONDITIONS the majority of animals in Cyprus live in, are unacceptable and are in dire need of improvement, the Federation of Environment Organisations (OPOK) said on Friday.

In light of news reports of terrible living conditions at an animal shelter in Aradippou, OPOK sought to say “yet again we are faced with illegalities against animals that concern the place and conditions they live in.

“The situation in Cyprus continues to be desperate, unacceptable even from the relevant government departments and several local authorities in regards to implementing current legislation with zero checks on the welfare of pets.”

Measures need to be taken, and provisions should be in place for the wellbeing of all animals that live on the island while maintaining the law to protect them from bad weather and limiting strays.

In June, 17 hunting dogs were found dead at a dog raising establishment at the Aradippou industrial area.
