Road tax renewals start

THE road transport department (RTD) has started renewing road taxes as of Thursday, the Transport ministry said.

The tax can be paid through the RTD’s website or at cooperative and commercial banks, citizens’ bureau centres, district post offices or at the RTD.

A valid MOT road-worthiness certificate and car insurance are necessary for renewal.

The deadline is March 10 after which a €10 fine will be imposed plus 10 per cent of the tax amount.

Owners who wish to immobilise their cars, or whose cars have been recycled, need to submit the relevant applications and certificates to the RTD. If they fail to do so, “the obligation for payment of the amount corresponding to the road tax continues to exist as a civil debt owed to the Republic,” the announcement said.

Vehicle owners have the option to pay for the whole year or for six months. As of mid-2016, vehicle owners will also have the possibility to pay the road tax quarterly.
