Marcos Baghdatis lost to Italian Fabio Fognini 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in the opening round of the ATP World Tour 1000 Masters Rogers Cup in Montreal on Tuesday evening.

After winning for the first time on the tour since February, last week in Washington, the 28-year-old Cypriot returned to his former slump, recording his 10th first-round exit in the last 11 tournaments.

The 13th-seeded Fognini came back from a set down to beat World No. 45 Baghdatis in 79 minutes, booking his spot in the second round where he will take on Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Meanwhile, the next stop for Baghdatis on the US Open tour will be the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
