Crewman rescued from German warship

CYPRUS’ Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) launched a rescue operation on Friday from the German warship FGS Braunschweig after a member of its crew was injured.
The defence ministry received a distress call from the ship at 6.05pm after a member of the crew had been severely injured after a large object had fallen on him during an exercise.
The ship is part of The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and is situated 30 nautical miles south off Larnaca’s coast.
JRCC responded immediately and sent its Achilleas helicopter which had on board an experienced medic.
The injured crewman was taken to Nicosia general hospital’s accident and emergency department.
The foreign ministry’s consular affairs department was informed as well as the administrative department of the German UNIFIL fleet in Cyprus in order to pass on the message to German authorities and the wounded man’s relatives.
“It is the second incident within five days where an injured crewman from a European ship has been taken by helicopter to Nicosia general hospital under the coordination of the JRCC, proving its capabilities,” a Defence Ministry statement said.
