Art: all around

By Maria Gregoriou

Tomorrow, Limassol and Nicosia will be buzzing with art, with Morfi Gallery presenting the group photography exhibition Three Lenses, One Island while the Art Prive House will be showcasing mixed-media artwork by Irsa Phanis under the title Paradise.

In Three Lenses, One Island photographers Alexandros Daskalakis, Constantia Katsari and Charis Michael have captured images from around the island which we may consider to be gone forever.

The three photographers used their minds as lenses and their eyes as shutters to create the end result – a collection which is bound to provoke strong emotion and bring to the surface images of rich colour.

At the opening of the exhibition, which is also the first exhibition to be organised by Unique Projects, there will be cheese and wine, with popular songs playing when the cello and piano performance takes a break.

Part of the net proceeds from the sale of the photographs will be donated to the Fundraising Charity Foundation, which supports children from low-income families.

The opening of the photography exhibition is also an opportunity for you to meet with members of the Unique Projects team, whose goal is to put into motion activities and projects which will improve the local community, and maybe talk about ideas for other such projects.

While Limassol will be highlighting what photography can do to bring people together and show us how different minds view the same island, Nicosia and the Art Prive House in Engomi will be opening its doors to a mixed media exhibition by Irsa Phanis under the title Paradise.

The exhibition will host drawings, mosaics and three-dimensional projects. All of the 100 or so pieces illustrate the artist’s love for colour, nature and flowers.

Phanis is a graduate of the St. Martin’s school of fine art and the London College of Fashion, where she specialised in ceramic mosaics and three-dimensional design.

After her studies and her return to Cyprus, the artist worked as a fashion stylist for a well-known fashion magazine. But she wanted to teach art, so she became an art teacher at the English School, where she taught art at all levels.

She then went on to create the Marti Art and Design School together with her sister, who is also an art teacher.

Although Phanis has participated in a number of group exhibitions throughout the years, this is her first solo exhibition, and it will be opened by the Minister of Education and Culture, Costas Kadis.
