A changing state of being

By Maria Gregororiou

The Views Gallery in Limassol will host the new solo exhibition by Katerina Savvides, entitled Who Am I, on Friday.

The works on display were started almost eight years ago when the artist was travelling from New York to London to Cyprus and back again. Her travels didn’t allow her time to set up oils and paint, so she came up with a solution to work on the go, and Who Am I is the result.

Savvides explains that in this body of work she attempted to “add a process to photography which enabled her [me] to work as if she [I] were working a painting.”

The photographs used in the exhibition were taken from all over the world. They show people who earn their living through doing something creative and who go about life outside the box.
Savvides tried to “capture who they are, not what they do”.

The artist took the photographs and altered them using various digital platforms. Once she was happy with the photograph, she printed it and started to work on it with watercolour, ink, pen, pencil and knife. A photo of the photo was then taken and the process was repeated. Some photographs have gone through this process 50 times.

With this exhibition and its title, Savvides, knowing that we all search for a definition of who we are, has come to the understanding that in fact identity is a fleeting state of being.
