Policeman turns loanshark

A POLICE officer serving in Nicosia was on Thursday among four persons arrested on suspicion of loan-sharking.

Authorities took into custody two men in Nicosia, aged 38 and 69, and another two, aged 33 and 34 in Limassol after a businessman reported to police that he was being extorted.

The suspects are expected on Friday to appear before district courts in Nicosia and Limassol for their remand hearings.

It’s understood that the businessman, who alleges he was the victim of loan-sharking, has reported three separate cases, though they could be linked.

According to reports, concerning one case, the businessman claims to have borrowed €12,000 from the 38-year-old police officer, who later demanded to be paid back €84,000.
