Cyprus to host record attempts

CYPRUS is to be the scene for two world record breaking attempts in extreme sports this summer.

Next month, South African Trevor Hutton aims to break the world freediving record by passing the 73 metre mark.

Freediving and the category of free apnoea in which Hutton will be making his effort requires the athlete to dive without oxygen tanks, fins or weights.

Hutton has more than 10 years of freediving experience and is able to hold his breath for over six minutes.

His lung volume is 8.9 litres. At rest his pulse rate is 35 per minute and during apnoea just 12 beats per minute.

Hutton is currently undergoing intensive preparation and training in Limassol, where the attempt is set to take place between June 16 and 18.

Meanwhile, Phileleftheros reported yesterday that 52-year-old Israeli Haim Rave would attempt to enter the Guinness Book of Records by flying from Israel to Cyprus and back using a Powered Parachute.

The paper said it was Rave’s hobby to fly light aircraft and that he owned a car air-conditioning factory.
