Village hit by Boxing Day whirlwind

A LARNACA district village sustained £30,000 in damage when a whirlwind hit the area on Friday morning, the community council president said yesterday.

Andreas Antoniou said the whirlwind, which started at around 1.30am in the southern part of Anglisides village, uprooted trees, tore down electrical wires and smashed store windows and doors. Luckily no people were in the area at the time and the whirlwind did not hit a densely populated area, he added.

Hardest hit were the Theocharous olive-press and a Bank of Cyprus branch, with total damage estimated at £30,000, Antoniou said.
