New university destined for Limassol

A SECOND university is set to open in two years, based on a decision taken by the Plenum on Thursday. The founding and operation of the new Technological University of Cyprus (TEPAK) will consist of the Higher Technological Institute (ATI), the Higher Hotel Institute (AXIK), the Nursing School and the Dasikou College.

TEPAK will give students the opportunity to study science and technology through teaching and research.

The plenum voted that the university’s Administrative Committee and the main premises will be based in Limassol and departments will be expected to open across the island.

The decision to open a new university was made to offer students the opportunity to gain degrees in science, technology and arts subjects on the island. The first departments of the University will be the School of Technology, the Health Services School, the school of Public Economy, the School of Science and the School of Arts and Communications.

The House Education Committee also discussed matters regarding the new University before the Plenum passed the new bill.

Deputies stated that TEPAK would operate the same way as the current University of Cyprus offering students recognised degrees in relevant subjects.

According to the articles of the law courses at the new University will initially be taken in Greek, while some courses may be available in other languages in the future.
