Turkish Cypriot caught with 500gr heroin

POLICE YESTERDAY arrested a Turkish Cypriot man who had half a kilo of heroin in his possession. Responding to an anonymous call, the Larnaca police monitored an area of Oroklini. At 2.00pm yesterday a man was seen stepping out of his car and police approached him asking to see his identification. He then allegedly attempted to escape throwing a black bag to the ground.

In his attempt to escape one policeman was harmed and taken to the Larnaca General Hospital for a wounded shoulder. Finally the police managed to capture Mehmet Moustafa Sak and confirmed that that there was 414 grams of heroin in the bag. The suspect was taken to the police station. The drugs were taken to the government laboratory for testing while Sak refuses to cooperate with the police. He is due to appear in Larnaca court today

Larnaca sheep theft

A LARGE number of sheep worth about ₤3,000 were stolen on Monday from a farm in Kalo Chorio in Larnaca. The theft was reported to the police by 48-year-old farmer Nikos Chrysostomou who said the sheep were stolen between 11.00am – 2.15pm on Monday when he was away from his farm.

When he returned he saw that 36 of his yews were missing. The Aradippou police visited the scene and conducted investigations to find out if the farm had been broken into. Chrysostomou does not have theft insurance.

Counterfeit ring bust

CYPRIOT police in collaboration with their Greek counterparts helped put an alleged ring of counterfeiters out of business, police said yesterday.

Greek police yesterday confirmed four men – two Greeks and two Cypriots – had been arrested in connection with printing counterfeit hundred dollar bills.

Police said three of the men had been arrested in Athens on Sunday in possession of 1,700 counterfeit $100 bills, which authorities believed were intended for the Cyprus market. Further investigations uncovered the whereabouts of the fourth man on Monday, as well as the group’s printing headquarters, where machinery used to make counterfeit money was found.
Athens police is holding the foursome.

Arson at Limassol car dealership

LIMASSOL police were yesterday looking into an early morning arson attack at a used car dealership. The arsonists torched one car, which was parked inside the dealership’s fenced area on Paphos Street. The car was destroyed while two others were slightly damaged.

The owner, Stelios Andreou, said he could not think of anyone who would want to hurt him.
