Embezzlement remand

A 27-YEAR-OLD woman and a man, 43, both from Limassol, were in custody yesterday in connection to the suspected embezzlement of around £100,000 from a cement company.

The alleged embezzlement was discovered in an audit when the company’s shareholders decided to dissolve the business.

On Sunday police told the court the suspected embezzlement had been carried out between 1998 and 2001.

The woman was the company’s accountant and had tried to cover the deficit by issuing a personal cheque, which consequently bounced.

She alleged that the company’s 43-year-old messenger had been systematically stealing money while she provided the cover. The woman also told investigators the messenger had threatened to hurt her if she did not cover his tracks.

The allegation was denied by the suspect who told the court he had nothing to do with the case. Both were remanded in custody for five days.
