Local party moves against Vlittis

PARALIMNI Mayor Nicos Vlittis’ term in office was yesterday hanging by a thread after councillors from his own party DISY announced he no longer enjoyed their confidence, fuelling speculation that he could soon be asked to tender his resignation.

Reports said the decision was taken at a meeting of DISY councillors yesterday in Paralimni, which was called to examine allegations that Vlittis had abused his authority.

An announcement was issued by saying the mayor’s actions had marred the party’s image.

Vlittis stands accused of using his influence to hasten the issue of building permits for coastal property developments on land snapped up by companies belonging to members of his family. The permits were allegedly rushed through to beat a deadline after which the issue of permits would be transferred from the municipality to the Town Planning Department.

The Auditor-general has launched an investigation into the allegations.
According to CyBC sources, yesterday’s decision against Vlittis was taken after he refused to fire or suspend his son-in-law, Andreas Kakoullis, as head of the department issuing building permits in the municipality.
DISY deputy Christos Pourgourides, who has spearheaded the campaign against Vlittis, heaped praise on the local party decision but warned the issue was far from over.

“There are many mix-ups in the island’s public life and they should be dealt with effectively,” he said.
