HARAVGHI: “Yes to Tassos” Eight months after the elections and a change of government, President Tassos Papadopoulos gets a high vote of approval, 60.8 per cent, from the public, while House President and AKEL leader, Demetris Christofias, remains the most popular party leader, making a good impression on everyday people and in the higher stratums of society. The results of a recent survey revealed satisfaction for the president and government’s work to date, compared to a less satisfactory response to the work of the opposition.
ALITHIA: “Denktash’s seven-point plan” Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is preparing a seven-point plan on the Cyprus problem which, in effect, cuts the head off the Annan plan. He is expected to introduce the plan before the elections in the occupied north, in another effort to turn the electoral climate in his favour. The plan was disclosed by Antenna TV channel. According to diplomatic sources in Nicosia, the Turkish government is aware of Denktash’s new plan.
PHILELEFTHEROS: “Supermarket prices gone off the rails” The Cyprus Consumers’ Association attacked the high prices prevalent in supermarkets across the country and called for healthy competition in a free market to be put into practice, not just in words. A consumer survey conducted in September highlighted stark price differences from 10 to 70 per cent of products between 40 of the biggest supermarkets in Cyprus. The Consumers’ Association called on retailers, manufacturers, importers and supermarkets to exercise responsibility to create a healthy competitive market.
POLITIS: “New evidence on Paralimni fiasco” Information on the conflict of interests at Paralimni Municipality is snowballing day by day. According to new evidence, certain people kept citizens of Paralimni in the dark about crucial decisions taken on the future development of the town, with the backing of the municipality. Relevant questions on the goings on at the municipality have been raised since the issue of land sold to companies owned by relatives of the Paralamni mayor came up. A dark cloud also surrounds the issuing of building permits in certain cases.
KYPROS SIMERA: “They predict the murder of Rauf Denktash by the Americans” The secret services of Britain and Israel, in top secret documents refer to the “political elimination” and “biological annihilation” of Denktash by the White House and Pentagon. According to sources, Turkey’s military leadership and secret service are “in a way” aware of the American plan. The same sources say Denktash is currently under the protection of a tight circle of Special Forces commandos of the occupying army.
SIMERINI: “Social revolution in Paphos” Paphos Police Divisional Commander, Spyros Koniotis, warned that if measures were not taken soon to deal with the increasing number of Greek Pontians and other foreigners in Paphos, a social revolution would explode. He said the “foreigner problem” has taken huge proportions and racism was already rife in schools, “something which we foresaw a long time ago,” said Koniotis. He said in the last few years there has been an upsurge of immigrants in Paphos, without the town or the local community being prepared for it.
