Paphos plans state-of-the-art rubbish disposal site

WORKS for the construction of a new state-of-the-art rubbish site in Paphos, to meet with EU standards, are set to begin by the end of the Year, the Paphos District office confirmed yesterday.

The £4 million project, at Marathounta, is the first to be constructed on the island, and, according to Paphos Deputy District Officer Yiannis Metaxas, all the necessary studies have been completed and the contracts for the project are expected to be signed within the next few days.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail yesterday, Metaxas said the new site would have facilities that would enable the separation of recyclable waste.

“This is a very important project for Paphos,” he said.

“It’s the first ultra-modern rubbish site to be constructed on the island and we are delighted that the project will only take around 13 months to be completed.

“The new rubbish dump will be specially constructed to meet with EU regulations and it will be the first of its kind, with facilities for the separation of waste material to recyclable.”

Metaxas said all the construction of the site at Gonies tis Episkopis in Marathounta would take care of the piling up of rubbish at the Ayia Marinoudas community and would improve Paphos’ image.

“The first thing that hits tourists when they drive to Paphos is the smell of the rubbish dump,” he said.
“It’s not something we would like people to see when they come to our city.”

Interior Ministry official Yiannis Koullapis told the Cyprus Mail yesterday the first stage of the project would involve the construction of the offices and the disposal cells.

“The disposal cells are specially constructed tanks in which we will be burying the waste matter,” he said.
“The reason we will be constructing these cells is so that we can use biogas created by the decomposition of the material for energy.

“The second stage is to create a recycling centre near the site for materials that will be separated at the rubbish site.”
