Coast road works stumble across ancient cemetery

AN ANCIENT cemetery has been dug up during road works on the final stretch of the Limassol coast road.
An excavator working on the road on Wednesday found human remains, and initially thought it to be a missing body from one of the mysterious disappearances of the past years. Police were immediately alerted to the scene and closed off the area to the public.

State Pathologist Eleni Antoniou was called in, but on examination ruled the bones were from several bodies not one, and were at least 1,000 years old.

The site has now been handed over to the archaeologists, who believe they are dealing with an ancient burial site.

The remains had also at some point been covered with seawater making forensic tests more difficult.
Limassol Coroner Elena Prokopiou was not involved with examination of the bones, though she has been kept informed by police. “I have not had a chance to see the bones as the police are holding them. They are not concerned about the bones being related to any criminal investigation. But there have not been any other archaeological finds at the site yet to date them accurately,” she added.

Limassol Police told the Cyprus Mail that the bones, “currently lie in storage with us until more historical and factual evidence is found to identify the bodies, specifically in regards to the date and age of the bones.”
