Security to be stepped up after new break in at ministry

SECURITY measures at the Ministry of Education are being upgraded following a break-in and theft on Sunday morning.

The break-in is the second to take place at the ministry in the past four months, highlighting the inadequacy of security at the ministry.
Burglars broke into the ministry, in the Acropolis area of Nicosia, apparently looking for documents in the director’s office.

The burglars, who appeared to be familiar with the grounds, broke into the building between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. They broke past the door leading to four offices and bore a hole into the wall of Director Andreas Skotinou’s office. However, they took nothing from Skotinou’s office, stealing just £5 and a file containing letters from his secretary’s office.

Experts examined the scene of the crime, gathering evidence left by the burglars, which is to undergo testing. The burglars’ motives are still under investigation, but a break-in for cash theft has been ruled out.

Examination of the grounds has shown the ministry to be extremely easy to break into, with even children making their way in and out without any difficulty.
