Big names to go under the hammer in Limassol

LIMASSOL is set to hold the biggest ever auction in Cyprus tonight at 8 with paintings by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Raul Duffy and Salvador Dali up for grabs.
The auction, set to be held at Hermal’s Auction House, will auction 110 paintings all valued at £10 million.

Ermoula Stylianidou of the Auction House told the Cyprus Mail that the auction is a historic event in Cyprus, “Because this is the first ever auction to happen in Cyprus, we are obviously very excited. All 100 works will be on auction and they will range from £110 to £1.5 million and will be expecting more Cypriot than foreign buyers at the auction.

We believe the people who will be present at the auction will be mostly people who love art, people who are curious about the auction and people who are collectors.”
Stylianidou added that they had not estimated exactly how much they expected the auction to fetch.

One painting by Picasso, valued to be £4 million, will have starting bid of £1.5 million whereas another Picasso, valued at £3.5 million, will start the bidding at £1.2 million.

The auction will have works of an accolade of famous painter including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who became famous as the bohemian artist of the Moulin Rouge. He was known for capturing the spirit and emotion of the belle époque, the “beautiful era” in Paris, through his posters and prints.

Also on display will be works of Pablo Picasso, born in Spain, and who was a child prodigy who was recognized as such by his art-teacher father, who ably led him along. Before he struck upon Cubism, Picasso went through a prodigious number of styles – realism, caricature, the Blue Period, and the Rose Period.
