Road toll spiralling upwards

ONE hundred people have died in 94 fatal road accidents so far this year, according to the latest figures.

Justice Minister Doros Theodorou said 20 of those who died were aged under 21, while 344 serious injuries during the first nine months of the year were among people aged less than 25.

Communications Minister Haris Thrasou confirmed that as part of the Strategic Plan for Road Safety 2005-2010 drawn up by the European Union, authorities aimed to slash the number of road victims in Cyprus by 50 per cent over the next six years.

Haris Evripidou of the Traffic Police Headquarters stressed that the primary cause of death for accident victims was brain damage, with 30 per cent of victims succumbing to severe head injuries.
