An odd sense of priorities

Sir,
Tuesday’s Cyprus Mail, page 5, tells us the new wing of the women’s prison in Nicosia is “regarded as on of the best prisons in Europe… and aims to get better”. Page 7 tells us Larnaca Airport has been voted “most disappointing airport” and “the services are just not up to standard”.

Does this seem slightly odd in a country so dependant on tourism from overseas? The millions who endure the endless queues and sardine-tin crowding at Larnaca Airport may have little concern for the 30 prisoners (6 per cent of a total prison population of 500, the report tells us) who are no longer overcrowded.

I am fascinated to know how the meeting went when it was decided to have an awful airport for the holiday makers and a great prison for the local bad girls. Justice Minister Doros Theodorou must have been on great form that day.
