Man killed in road crash

AN 86-YEAR-old man was killed yesterday morning after a car slammed into his vehicle while he was trying to do a u-turn on a Limassol road.

Chrysostomos Chrysanthou was turning on Franklin Roosvelt Steet when a car slammed into his vehicle, sending it crashing into a third car parked on the side of the road.

The collision trapped the 86-year-old in his car, requiring the fire service to free him.
According to eyewitnesses, the man was dead before their arrival.

He was rushed to hospital, where his death was confirmed.

The 28-year-old driver of the car that struck the victim was also admitted to hospital, but was not in a serious condition.

Limassol traffic police chief Phillipos Papaelia stressed that despite the daily warnings, this was the 28th road victim in Limassol this year.

Some 78 people have died in traffic accidents across the island so far, prompting the government to propose strict measures in an effort to cut the gruesome trend.
