PHILELEFTHEROS: “Dangerous Avenue”. The Green Youth Party is demanding radical changes to Nicosia’s Kallipoleos Avenue in order to serve students. According to the Youth Party/ thousands of students use the busy street on a daily basis and yet it is not equipped to deal with pedestrians. It said the lack of pavements, poor lighting and uneven road levels was unsatisfactory and requested the “construction of wide pavements to serve students, and not a wide avenue for high speed vehicles”.
ALITHIA: “Three Greek Cypriots arrested in occupied areas”. Three Greek Cypriot men were arrested in occupied Famagusta on Thursday. According to the occupation forces, Antonis Panayides, 77, Simeon Tofia, 61 and Elias Parpouna, 55, were arrested because they had crossed over into a military zone. At the time of their arrest the three men had been trying to visit their properties in occupied Lyssi. All three now live in Kalo Chorio in the Larnaca district.
MACHI: “New students back to College”. College students have gone back to school a month earlier than expected in order to attend preliminary courses before the academic year officially commences in October. Cyprus College and Intercollege are offering English lessons and the Frederick Institute of Technology offers English and Maths to students who need refresher courses before they start their lessons. The programmes are also designed to help students become accustomed to the new environment and to get to know the academic staff and other students.
POLITIS: “He chased them with a broomstick”. A 20-year-old boy was arrested after he tried to chase away police officers from his home. The police had gone to the young man’s home looking for two underage girls who had run away from the Social Services youth hospital and were known to be staying with him. The 20-year-old’s father, also at home, failed in his attempt to intervene and calm the situation. The young man was arrested, charged in writing and released.
HARAVGHI: “Positive Climate”. The climate at the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday was positive for Cyprus. During the meeting, the EU regulation on the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community was discussed. Meanwhile, in a separate issue, Russia told Foreign Minister George Iacovou that Moscow was committed to a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem through negotiations, a solution that must be accepted by the people on the island.
