The results are out and they’re good

THOUSANDS of teenagers yesterday came to terms with the results of their eagerly awaited A-level and AS level exam scores. Cyprus was no different than any other country around the world, with students anxiously waiting for the publication of their British based Advanced Level results. Over 1,000 students flocked to their schools across the island to pick up their results.

A total of 1,227 Cypriot candidates received their A-level results on Thursday, the British Council said yesterday. According to the table of results sent to the British Council from Britain, a further 184 students received the results of their AS levels.

Of that number, a total 479 exam results were grade A passes, securing many students places at their first choice of university.

According to Stefanos Matsis, a student at Nicosia’s English School, consistent and sheer hard work, were behind his impressive four grade A passes at A-level and three grade A passes at AS level.

The 18-year-old secured top marks in A-level Mathematics, Modern Greek, Biology and Chemistry. His remaining As were in AS level Statistics, Physics and Geography.

“After my exams I knew I’d get As because I felt I’d done well,” he told the Cyprus Mail yesterday. The teenager said he was not alone in his achievement and that from what he’d heard numerous of his friends and classmates had done equally well.

He said: “I’m definitely satisfied with my results. I studied a lot before the exams and during the year. Normally to achieve grade A passes you need to be consistent in your studying and not just cram at the end of year, although there are few people who can achieve that.”

Matsis, who is currently doing his National Guard service, hopes to secure a place at Cambridge or Imperial College in the UK when he applies there next year.

However, Matsis is probably not alone in his ambitions, with numerous candidates securing top marks yet again this year.

In fact, according to the results, the number of candidates registered at Limassol’s examination centres far outnumbered those in Nicosia, Paralimni, Larnaca or Paphos, with 650 candidates registered for this year’s A-levels. Of that number, 268 received grade A passes; 117 received a B grade; 105 passed a C; one passed with a C#; there were 53 Ds; one D#; 36 Es; eight Ms; seven Ns; 35 Us; 6 U#; and one #. A remaining 12 were recorded as absent.

A further 26 candidates picked up their AS level results. Three were As; two were Bs; seven Cs; four Ds; five Es; one U; two U#; two blanks; and two absentees.

In the capital, 385 students picked up their results, which included a total of 104 As; 77 Bs; 53 Cs; one C#; 46 Ds; two D#; 31 Es; four E#; eight Ns, 32 Us; 14 U#; and 13 absentees.

A further 124 AS level students in Nicosia achieved 38 grade A passes; 12 grade B passes; 17 Cs; 17 Ds; 14 Es; seven Us; nine U#; and 10 absentees.

In Paphos 117 A-level students achieved 41 grade As; 23 Bs; 16 Cs; 11 Ds; four Es; two E#; four Ns; five Us; and five U#. Four of the 117 failed to show up for the exam. Meanwhile the town’s 18 AS level students received two As; two Bs; three Cs; two D’s; three Es; two Us; and two U#. Two were also absent from the exam.

In Larnaca out of 64 A-level students, 14 passed with an A grade; 18 with Bs; 12 with Cs; 11 with Ds; three Es; one E#; and two Us. Three students were absent. Meanwhile 16 AS level students achieved three grade As; one grade B; one C; two Ds; two Es; four Us; one U# and four absentees.

Paralimni students chose to only sit for A-level exams, with six out of 11 candidates securing grade A passes. Of the remainder, two achieved a C and three a D grade.
