SIMERINI: “Relatives blame lack of signposting for loved one’s death”. The relatives of 35-year-old Giorgos Kyriacou Panayiotou have blamed the lack of signposts and lifeguards for his drowning on Thursday in the coastal area of Dasoudi in Oroklini. The 35-year-old was found floating by other swimmers in the sea at around 5pm. His relatives have blamed the authorities and have said they plan to take legal action to vindicate his death.

PHILELEFTHEROS: “EU veto on Ankara”. Ankara’s attempt to upgrade the status of the breakaway state through the European Union fell through after the co-ordinated efforts of Greece and Cyprus, the daily reported yesterday. Exploiting the organisation of the joint EU-Islamic Conference meeting in Istanbul in October, Ankara tried to present the breakaway state as the Turkish Cypriot constituent state as provided for in the Annan peace plan.

ALITHIA: “Proposals with exchanges”. The daily reported yesterday that Turkey decided to table three proposals: the opening of Famagusta under Turkish Cypriot administration, the restoration of Greek Cypriot cemeteries in the occupied north, and the excavation of mass graves believed to contain the bodies of Greek Cypriots killed during the invasion. The three moves would be used as support for the Turkish government’s decision for a customs union with Cyprus, Alithia said.

MACHI: “British in the role of cops”. In its lead story the daily claimed that the government had left the responsibility for the protection of Princess Anne to the British who was in Cyprus on Thursday for a one-day visit. The measures were draconian throughout the visit and were criticised by many who said such behaviour was only fit for subjects of the crown. The same sources also mentioned the hostile behaviour displayed by Britain in relation to the Cyprus problem, the daily said.

POLITIS: “Crushed to death by a tractor”. A 64-year-old Larnaca village man was killed on Thursday afternoon after his tractor toppled over and crushed him underneath it. Andreas Shialou from Klavdia village was farming his fields, when he lost control of his vehicle, which overturned and buried him beneath it. Although he was rushed to Larnaca general hospital, duty doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

HARAVGHI: “Morphou mayor to appear at Church service under certain conditions”. Morphou mayor Charalambos Pittas said he was prepared to attend church services at the Holy Church of Saint Mamas in the occupied areas as long as politics were left out of the occasion. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, following a meeting with Morphou Bishop Neophytos the previous day, Pittas said the services, which will be held on September 1 and 2, had to remain an entirely ecclesiastical occasion and that politicising the event should be avoided.
