Foreigners arrested over kiosk robbery

TWO foreigners were arrested yesterday in connection with a kiosk robbery and for possessing false documents. The crimes were committed between December 2000 and July 27 2004.
According to police, at 4.30pm on Wednesday the foreigners were seen stepping out of a car outside a kiosk in Strovolos. One of the two then entered the kiosk and was talking to the cashier keeping him away from the cash desk when the second foreigner slipped in unnoticed and stole £200 from the till.

After their departure the kiosk worker noticed that the money was missing and immediately called the police who located the foreigners in the car a short distance away. Searching the vehicle the police found the money as well as two registration booklets for foreigners.

The two were arrested. Further investigations revealed that one of them had come to Cyprus in December 2000 on a false passport hoping to secure a resident’s permit on the island.
In September 2003 he returned to his home and then came back to Cyprus with genuine papers that secured him a resident’s permit.

The second foreigner came to Cyprus in July 2002 and was permitted to stay until 30/06/03 as a student, yet when his resident’s permit expired he remained on the island.
