Turkey will have to pull out if it wants to join Europe

Sir,
I note that the US are pressing the EU to admit Turkey. This gives hope to Cyprus.
Since new member states can only be admitted with unanimity, this will never happen unless and until Turkish troops are withdrawn from the north of Cyprus, because the Republic of Cyprus, now a full EU member state, would always veto the admission of Turkey into the EU as long as the Turkish army which invaded Cyprus in July 1974, remains as an occupying force. Unfortunately most of the people in the UK, the EU and the US do not understand that the presence of Turkish troops was the fundamental reason why an overwhelming majority of Greek Cypriots voted ‘no’ in the April referendum on re-unification – they were not prepared to legitimise the presence of the army which invaded and has occupied almost 40 per cent of their island for 30 years.
