AKEL announce Euro Parliament candidates

AKEL yesterday announced its six candidates for the June 13 European Parliament elections.
The six were selected by the party’s central committee from a list of 19 candidates through secret ballot.

The candidates are, deputy Adamos Adamou, actress Despina Bebedeli, central committee member Neoklis Sylikiotis, former interior ministry permanent secretary Kyriacos Triantafyllides, George Hadjigeorgiou, deputy and the chairman of the sports federation Titos Christophides.
Asked why two known AKEL deputies – Eleni Mavrou and Doros Christodoulides — with experience in the EU were not on the list, party leader Demetris Christofias said Mavrou had expressed her desire to stay and work in Cyprus.

“I tried to convince her but did not succeed,” he said.

“There is nothing wrong with Eleni Mavrou and Doros Christodoulides not being on the list,” Christofias added.

He said he expected his party’s voter concentration to be high for the elections securing AKEL a high percentage.

“We will do our best as a leadership and the AKEL candidates so that the party, which is established as a serious political force in the country, contests the elections and get the highest possible percentage to confirm both the prestige and the respect it commands in the European Parliament and the international scene,” Christofias said.

The AKEL leader said parties were judged by the current political situation and also judged and should be judged by the people on the basis of their consistent and continuous contribution to the Cyprus issue.
