Fire in Platres threatens Troodos forest

TWO fire fighting helicopters were yesterday scrambled to the Platres area after a blaze threatened the Troodos forest.

According to reports, the fire started at 10.30am in a Public Works Department dwelling, which was used as a holiday home.

The fire was put under control after co-ordinated efforts of two helicopters – one from the British bases – several fire engines and many fire fighters.

The head of the Limassol forestry department Takis Attipas said authorities were mobilised as soon as they were notified about the blaze.

“We came here with three-four of our own vehicles and we had help from the fire service and the bases,” Attipas said.

The Muktar of Platres, Charalambos Stokkos said the fire threatened all the surrounding area.
He added: “All the surrounding area was threatened; the Troodos forest was threatened.”
“Fortunately we contained fire in the area; a total of 2,000 square metres were burnt,” Attipas said.

The Forestry Department however announced that the fire burnt around 3,000 square metres.
“A dwelling, which belongs to the Public Works Department and was used as a holiday home was burnt,” Attipas said.

The exact cause of the fire is being investigated by police.
