Nikitas comes out against the plan

ATTORNEY-general Solon Nikitas yesterday joined the growing number of high-profile officials to come out emphatically against the Annan plan in the run-up to the April 24 referendum.

Nikitas said it was his duty as legal advisor to the Republic to give his opinion on the Annan plan. He said the plan was based on the denial of human rights and even their removal, referring to the repression of existing appeals at the European Court of Human Rights and the removal of the right to seek a remedy or protection from that court.

No Cypriot would benefit from the ostracism of human rights, he said. The legal chief highlighted what he said were flaws in the plan relating to the equality of the two constituent states, adding that the plan’s unfairness would eventually lead to its downfall.

“That which is built on unfairness contains the seed of collapse,” said Nikitas.
On the international front, Nikitas argued that the plan would create a dependent state in constant paralysis due to inherent weaknesses. Both constituent states would also be dependent because of the intervention rights of the guarantor powers, he added.
“History shows that those who forget or ignore the past are condemned to relive it,” said Nikitas.
