Paphos fire
A FIRE broke out yesterday at 1.30am at an apartment in Kato Paphos on the Tombs of the Kings Road. The couple living in the apartment, Takis Louka, and his wife were asleep when the fire began.
They woke up and managed to leave before they were injured. The fire brigade attended the scene and put the fire out, which only damaged the hall, two chairs and the television.
Police investigations ruled out arson as the cause of the fire.
Contraband arrest
AN IRANIAN man was stopped by police on Wednesday in his car in Paphos and after a search of the vehicle they found ten cartons of various brands of cigarettes.
Police then conducted a search of his home and discovered a further 103 cartons.
They also found ₤850 cash. The man was arrested with a court warrant and is being held by the Paphos CID.
School fire
A PRIMARY school in Limassol was the target of a fire that broke out on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the schoolyard and the storeroom. The fire brigade managed to put the fire out before it caused any serious damage. The CID visited the scene to investigate the cause of the fire and found a burnt residue, which was kept as evidence.
Heroin arrest
TWO MEN were arrested in Nicosia for questioning regarding possession and sale of drugs on Wednesday.
At 1.20pm police stopped a car driven by a 25-year-old foreigner, a permanent resident of Cyprus. During a search of his vehicle police discovered a piece of tin foil that contained 0,2 grams of heroin.
The foreigner admitted he had bought the heroin for ₤15 for his own personal use and named his supplier. Police then arrested the other man also in Nicosia with a court warrant.
In a body search of the foreigner the police also found 0.6 grams of heroin. The two men are in police custody.
Alien arrests
POLICE yesterday arrested another 14 illegal immigrants in their campaign to stop foreigners illegally entering the island.
Eleven people were arrested for living in Cyprus without a visa, two for entering the island illegally and one for working without a work permit.
A 55-year-old man was also arrested, charged but then released for employing a foreigner without a work permit.
