PHILELEFTHEROS “Foreigners committing crime” The government is concerned about the increase in crime committed by foreigners and Justice Minister Doros Theodorou has informed police they are not to hesitate deporting those who break the law. He made statements yesterday saying murders and attempted murders were mainly committed by foreigners. He added Cyprus was working with other countries to clamp down on foreigners committing crimes.
POLITIS “The battle of the airports” Cyprus Airways is concerned that in the event of a solution to the Cyprus Problem there will be three legal airports on the island. Cyprus Turkish Airlines, which operates in the North, faces a larger economic problem than Cyprus Airways but if the Annan plan is accepted then their luck will change with international flights.
HARAVGHI “It will pass only if changes are made” 94 per cent of Greek Cypriots have said they will reject the Annan Plan unless the United Nations make changes, according to a survey conducted by the company CSB for the newspaper Simerini. The survey was conducted from March 18-23 and 1,000 people were asked. President Tassos Papadopoulos’ vote will have a huge effect on the public. If he votes no 76 per cent of the population will follow. If he accepts the plan 57 per cent will be against, 35 per cent will be for and eight per cent are undecided.
THARROS “He sold her to buy drugs” A 22-year-old man in Paphos allegedly forced his 16-year-old girlfriend into a life of prostitution in order to feed his drug habit. The girl found the courage to go the police and inform them of his threats. He would give her cannabis and ecstasy and allegedly sent her off to sleep with men for money that he would take. The police searched the man’s home and found cannabis plants. He admits to possessing drugs, but denied any involvement in soliciting sex.
ALITHIA “Talks begin with Annan” UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan has arrived in Burgenstock to take part in the final stages of negotiations on the Cyprus problem. He took with him a new and changed plan. After his arrival, Annan met with Alvaro De Soto and the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders in Switzerland in the hope to find a solution to the Cyprus Problem. They are expected to reach a result in the next 24 hours, which will go to referendum.
SIMERINI “A near tragedy in Ayia Fyla” A man insulted a 16-year-old boy at a coffeeshop in Ayia Fyla and the teenager then told his father, who proceeded to go to the coffeeshop with a loaded shotgun. Once there he said he would sort the man out for insulting his son. People there tried to take the gun away from the father and two shots went off. The father was arrested and released the next day.
