PHILELEFTHEROS “He slipped into the river and drowned” In an attempt to gather rich soil from the riverbank, 63-year-old Emilios Rialas from Limassol lost his life. His family reported him missing on Saturday and his body was discovered on Sunday in the Kouris River near the Ayios Georgios Bridge. The man used to work for an insurance company before he retired and spent his time on his farm in Ayios Georgios. When he failed to return home on Saturday his wife went out looking for him and then called police. Pathologist Sophoclis Sophocleous after an autopsy said the man had been in the water for some time.

POLITIS “Chinese arrested in Nicosia” On Saturday, a Chinese man was arrested and given an eight-day remand on suspicion of committing armed robberies against students. Police have witness testimonies against the 24-year-old, who is allegedly a member of a gang who robbed nine Chinese students last month. The suspect has been in Cyprus since September as a student, but has not registered at any college. He has refused to co-operate with the police and denies any involvement in the robberies.

HARAVGHI “Three minutes’ silence in memory of victims of Madrid” As a symbol of support to the Spanish people who suffered at the hands of terrorists, the Cypriot government has asked the people to honor them with a three-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives. The silence will take place at 1pm and the government is asking all those working to gather together in a pledge of silence. They have also requested for all those driving to stop their cars.

THAROS “A near tragedy in Limassol” A restaurant collapsed yesterday on Ayios Andreas Street in Limassol putting 300 customers in danger. Two people were injured when the wall and the roof caved in, while the rest panicked and began to run from the restaurant. The two injured people were taken to Limassol General Hospital and are out of danger. The fire brigade was called to the scene to search for bodies in the rubble, but nobody was found.

ALITHIA “Mysterious death of a 20-year-old” The death of a 20-year-old remains a mystery after he was found on his bed by his father. The young man was found unconscious in his bedroom in Yeri on Saturday night. In a state of shock, his father called the police and an ambulance as well as the pathologist Sophoclis Sophocleous. After an autopsy Sophocleous said there appeared to be no criminal activity involved but that an accurate cause of death would be determined after a second autopsy. Sophocleous determined that the man had been dead for at least nine hours.

SIMERINI “Explosive drug problem after a solution” The war against drugs is not only being fought by police but also by the National Guard, ever since narcotics were found at army camps. Defence Minister Koullis Mavronicholas has decided to take active measures to clamp down on drug use. The first will be to conduct an investigation that will last for eight months. They want to find the people responsible for getting drugs into army camps. There will also be efforts to locate evidence regarding which army camps represent the biggest drug problem.
