PHILELEFTHEROS: “They wrapped her in a curtain and dustbin”. A 50 year old teacher was humiliated in front of her class when two students ages 16 and 17 wrapped a curtain around her neck and then covered her head with a dustbin. The two pupils were arrested are expected to appear in court. The paper claims this incident proves that violence and unacceptable behaviour at schools has reached worrying levels. The pupils attend a Limassol high school.
POLITIS: “Return to Zurich”. History may yet repeat itself as the UN has decided to hold four-day talks in Zurich. It was the same city that hosted other historic talks 45 years ago. Preparations for the talks are reaching their peak and the Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis yesterday conferred with Tayyip Erdogan for the first time where they spoke about the Cyprus problem. The Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis was scheduled to call Colin Powell yesterday. On Wednesday Molyviatis said the roads opened in New York cannot be closed.
MACHI: “Hateful relationship between police and prisoners”. The paper yesterday outlined a recent incident which has caused unrest between police and inmates at the central prison. One of the prison wardens told the paper the incident was provoked by a police officer who, after meeting with an inmate, went on to tell a man whose wife was raped that the inmate was the perpetrator. Two Russian Pontians who were arrested in connection with the rape then confessed the police that the same inmate – jailed for previous offences – had coerced them into raping the woman.
HARAVGHI: “Lillikas returns fire at Politis”. Lillikas has given Politis a detailed account of his plan for tourism regarding some hotels after the paper yesterday attempted to damage his reputation and reliability. “The only interests I have at heart is those of the Cypriot people.” He then attacked the paper by saying they had placed advertisements in their own publications for hotel offers in the North offering Greek Cypriots special deals. The Minister of Industry said he was felt saddened by Politis’ comments.
ALITHIA. “DISY will decide on April 3”. DISY have said they will decide whether they are pro or against a solution in a Pancyprian meeting on April 3-4 with their 1,800 members. The party decided this in a meeting on Wednesday and this will give DISY one week to read over the final proposal before announcing their stance. Only five members were present at the meeting. Three deputies were abroad and the remaining three were at a demonstration in Famagusta.
SIMERINI: “The scandal continues”. The paper said all the cases regarding squandering of the church property and forgery of the Archbishop’s signature will be brought before justice. According to Paphos Bishop Chrysostomos, the church is awaiting the return of £4.5 million from a businessman. He said the Archbishop’s records said the businessman in question was owed £50,000 by the church, however investigations showed that he actually owed the church over ₤5 million.
