‘4,000 lights and four days to put them up’

Couple create Christmas wonderland for charity

AN ENGLISH couple and their friend have created a Christmas and New Year’s Park in their gardens in Kitio to raise money for charity.

Peter and Sally Holman along with neighbour Val Loucery are hoping to raise funds for the Anti-Cancer Committee, the Patient Prosperity Fund of the Larnaca General Hospital and for children of limited means at the Kitio Elementary School.

The couple have been collecting the lights and decorations for the last six years.

“We did the same charity in England, every year for six years. The funds were donated to the “Radcliff Hospital of Oxford” for cancer research,” said 64-year-old retired civil servant Peter. “When we came to live in Cyprus two years ago, we decided to do the same thing here.”

The couple shipped £3,000 worth of equipment over last year and set up the park for the first time in Cyprus. And the results, says Peter, were quite good.

This year the project has expanded over two houses. “There are in total 4,000 lights and it took me four days to put them up. But it is worth it.”

“Children were getting very excited and saying how much they liked it. It was so nice to hear children complementing the Park, because after all, Christmas is about the children, isn’t it?”
