Vassiliou honoured for years of contribution

FORMER PRESIDENT of the Republic and honorary president of the United Democrats Vassiliou was honoured yesterday for his years of contribution to market research.

During lunch at Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, president of the Cyprus Association of Opinion Poll and Market Research Enterprises (SEDEAK) Christos Michaelides attributed Cyprus’ financial success in Europe to Vassiliou and called him the “father of market research in Cyprus” who was the first Cypriot politician to get involved in the sector.

In his brief speech, Michaelides concluded by awarding the former president of the Republic with an honorary plaque. “It is the least recognition we can offer you as SEDEAK”, he said.
Vassiliou, clearly moved by the gesture, thanked SEDEAK for the honour saying that although he has been appreciated by various other organisations before, he was especially moved by this one.

“The research market was an unknown fruit to me. When I returned to Cyprus in 1962, I had the nerve to insist on what I knew best: research and statistics”.

He then admitted that, although he was the founder of the Middle East Marketing Research Bureau, he had never been to the Middle East when he had founded it.

“I’m proud of myself and everyone here for the work we’ve done, because by going abroad you will see that Cyprus is famous in this sector.

“Large companies have offices here. We are internationally appreciated for our trustworthiness and honour. And I say this because this is a sector in which one can easily deceive.”
